The materials are available for faculty and instructors to use on their own, at their  own pace, and they are available to those who may be facilitating face-to-face or online training sessions.

To get started, you’ll need a Development Course shell and a Practice Course shell, which will allow you to complete the assignments in the courses. If you do not have one or both of those course shells available to you, you can login to an online form to request one now.

The new courses in “Blackboard University” (BbU), include:

• BbU402: Enhancing Communication (discussions, collaboration, chat)

Get started now! After requesting (if necessary) your Development Course and/or Practice Course, login to Blackboard using your link-blue login ID and password. Click on the ‘Courses’ sub-tab, and then within the “Course Catalog” module, select “.Learning Systems Support.”

To self-enroll, click once on the drop-down menu for any of the training courses listed and select “enroll.”

I have tried it out on the iPad, and it’s easy to use.  Once you load the app and sign in, your contacts list (from your existing Lync account) will be populated. Give it several seconds to update everyone’s status, and you are good to go.

Lync is an instant messaging/instant meeting (audio/video/screensharing) tool that is available to all faculty, staff and students at UKy. Users can add contacts from “affiliated” companies and chat applications. UKy users can download Lync on the UKy download page and can find support at the Lync Wiki.

Virtual Anatomy Lab in Second Life

Ricetopher Freenote (Dr. Christopher Rice) and Kezia1618 Landar (Dr. April Richardson) will join Wildcat Thursday (Patsy Carruthers) and Alice Burgess (Beth Kraemer) in-world for a brief presentation to the Fall Internet2 meeting. The focus will be Second Life as a K-20 tool that requires high-speed Internet access. Here is a description of our 15-minute session:

Virtual Anatomy and Political Science in Second Life – University of Kentucky uses its space in Second Life to support teaching and research projects as well as special events. April Richardson, Ph.D., (Kezia1618 Landar) teaches a virtual anatomy lab in SL, and Christopher S. Rice, Ph.D., (Ricetopher Freenote) has used SL to support his course American Political Thought, in which students explored political theory concepts in the built and social environments of Second Life. Our session starts at 8:45am Eastern time (5:45am SLT) on Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, in the virtual WT Young Library. We will visit the virtual anatomy lab, as well (photo of lab building, which is next to the library). There are two ways to join us, but be aware that some challenges exist and, depending on how you attend, you may not hear all parts of the presentation.

1. Join us in Second Life*. We’ll start at the virtual WTY Library on University of KY Island and we’ll move to the virtual anatomy lab to wrap up. If you join us here, you will not hear Wildcat’s introduction; you will only hear the in-world presenters. Since Wildcat’s portion is very short, at the beginning, then you won’t miss much. We’d love to have you there to observe! (Please refrain from discussion if you attend in-world; we have only 15 minutes to present and will not have time for Q&A.)
2. Join via streaming for I2 Meeting attendees at https://www.mcnc.org/video-streaming/Internet2Members.

This year I decided to do something for my daughter, and so I’m taking a photo of her every day for a year, and in the end I’ll send my materials off to Blurb and have a very nice bound book in return. Comparing the two products, I thought I might want to rebind David’s book at the same time, so, consequently, I’m retyping all the memories. Below is the text of a conversation with my grandmother and her two sisters, who all lived together. I taped the conversation. It was short … they always had trouble warming up to “technology.” Still, it was pretty interesting, thinking about what was new tech to a child 100 years ago. Interesting enough perhaps to share on a Saturday.

Note from your Mom: I asked your Great-Grandmother and her sisters what would be the biggest difference between their childhoods and yours.

Ma: He will know all of the new inventions that I didn’t know anything about. Like electric lights. We lived in a rural area and we didn’t have electric lights. We had oil lamps. The first car that I ever remember seeing was about 1915. I guess I was about 5 years old. There were cars and electric lights, but we didn’t have those. He will have those.

Tut: The car Mary was talking about, it was an old T-Model. We rode in it. We’d go to church at Coldwater in it. The man who owned it lived down the road near Asbury [Cemetery, in Calloway County, Ky.]. When he would drive it up the hill that you get to before Asbury, he would turn around and back it up the hill. It didn’t have power enough to go forward.

Ma: And when we’d go up a hill in ours [later, their car], we’d some of us have to get out and walk. It didn’t have power enough.

Tut: And it had a hand-crank.

Enie: It was hard to crank!

Tut: And we didn’t have a washing machine; we had to do them [the clothes] all on a washboard. I remember one time we had our tubs on the back porch when we lived out on the hill. Me and Alline were washing, and we had some chairs and were sitting down. We were rinsing the clothes then – you know, we would drag them on the board and then we would rinse them in the tub, in different tubs. We were sitting there on the back porch and we heard the mail carrier coming. We jumped up and ran so he wouldn’t catch us washing clothes.

Enie: We got our first washing machine in about 1925, when we moved to Mayfield.

The page at http://go.uky.edu/ukcorehelp is intended to be of assistance, providing 1. step-by-step instructions for both the instructor and the students; 2. providing video demonstrations of both the instructor and students steps; and 3. providing links to other pages in the Academic Technology Training Library, so that interested instructors can expand their new knowledge.

We have also included an email link to a small group that will be available to answer questions on the fly for those instructors new to Bb who need help placing that assessment assignment. In this time of “ramping up” knowledge quickly, we thought that additional piece would be helpful, or at least reassuring.
