web 2.0 via old tech

Yes, we’ll be using old technology to bring you … new technology. To make portions of the opening events for University of KY Island in Second Life (March 20 – this Thursday!) more accessible, TASC will be streaming the in-world panel from 1pm to 2pm (that’s Eastern time), with the results available both online and on UKTV. Why? Well, there’s a saying in television that goes something along the lines of (paraphrasing) create it once, play it everywhere. The more of your “channels” and available time you use, the greater audience you’ll get. We’re hoping to reach not only the actively interested but also the mildly curious and the clicking hordes. We’re shameless.

Keep this in mind: the live version (both online and on TV) may be – okay, will be – a little fuzzy. That means that the text chat boxes may not be as clear as you need them to be; however, you can get the idea of what’s going on. The good news is that we will also be recording in-world, and we’ll come away with clean video that can then be streamed after the fact for clearer viewing and better grasp of content. Yes, so you noticed that we’re actually creating twice and playing everywhere. You’re very smart. Go back to sleep.

A live stream of the in-world presentation (1-2pm Eastern on March 20) that opens University of KY Island in Second Life will be available online and on University of Kentucky Cable Channel 48. Visit the streaming webpage at http://www.uky.edu/TASC/AV/sl_stream.php (or link directly to the streaming at rtsp:// You must have the most recent version of QuickTime to view online. For cable, you simply need to be viewing a television on campus that is connected to UKy cable.

You can also get a look at the dance later in the afternoon, from 4pm to 5pm.
